Unfortunately, once again it is the students who lose here by missing out on a day of school and critical learning time. Certainly, teachers have every right to their personal political opinions and they have every right to gather to support those rights or to oppose legislation they believe may adversely affect those rights. However, they should do so in their free time and not at the expense of the children they are supposed to be educating.
Schools closed and students lost out on a day of classes due to teachers’ union protests once again, this time in Michigan. Schools in several areas across the state had to close Tuesday because too many teachers called in sick or simply took the day off to travel to the state capital to join in union protests against the vote to pass right-to-work legislation in the state. The new law will allow employees, including teachers, the option of joining a union and paying the costly dues that come with membership where it is now mandatory. The legislation will not outlaw unions in anyway, nor will it affect collective bargaining rights; it would just give employees a choice of whether or not they want to join. Of course the unions vehemently oppose this legislation because it threatens their power.
