Great Night for Education Reform in Colorado

Although the results are not yet official, it looks like education reform is here to stay in Douglas County. After a highly contested race that captured the nation’s attention, the four pro-reform candidates were victorious. This isn’t just a victory for those four candidates, it is a victory for parents and students who will undoubtedly benefit from the positive changes the Board of Education has and will continue to put forth.
Douglas County wasn’t the only area in the state that wants education reform, in Jefferson County, Denver and Adams County reform candidates also won significant victories. Colorado voters also overwhelmingly rejected Amendment 66, not just because it was a billion dollar tax hike but because it was a billion dollar tax hike for education that offered no reforms.

While reformers had a great night last night, the unions most certainly did not. Their candidates lost in all the school board races and despite contributing millions of dollars to the pro-Amendment 66 campaign failed miserably.

For decades now, education reformers have been trying to battle the education blob unions created. The first defeat came when Douglas County put an end to negotiations and collective bargaining agreements in their districts. The second came last night in Colorado. Hopefully now the rest of the nation can continue to the fight and finally do away with union power and destruction of public education once and for all.
